Over time, breasts that once sat high and perky on a woman’s frame can sag. One common cause is that the collagen that gives the breast its structure begins to erode. Some of my patients notice a concern when the skin of their breasts comes to rest on their abdomen or the nipples become droopy. A “flabby” character of breast tissue, instead of firm, well-shaped breasts is another strong motivation for change.
Breast lift surgery can help women achieve a more youthful-looking appearance. When I conduct the procedure, I create a well-contoured and attractive shape, and by adding strength to the underlying structure of the breasts, patients can better maintain their results into the future.
In the initial consultation, patients have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the procedure. I use the visit to evaluate their concerns and to recommend an individualized surgical approach for correction.
In a traditional breast lift, a surgeon removes a section of skin and positions the reshaped breast higher on the patient’s body. However, years of research has taught me that relying on breast skin alone to hold this new shape is not ideal.
Rather than simply lifting the breast, I focus on breast reshaping in my procedures. This means that I:
The skin follows the underlying gland. The last step is to remove skin and tighten it so that the results of the lift are longer lasting.
Taking these steps both rejuvenates the appearance of the breasts and helps patients enjoy long-term results.
Scarless RF Lift Surgery & Breast Augmentation. 2 months postop. Results are not perfect; the left side is still a bit droopier. However, the appearance is much better than she would have with a traditional mastopexy.
Scarless RF Lift Surgery. 48 years old. Breast augmentation in a different city. Her soft tissue extends below the implant on both sides. The right implant was subpectoral, the left, submammary. At two months, her shape is significantly improved. No needle marks are visible. She had her implants removed and replaced in the correct position, along with an RF lift.
Patients have surgery in the operating rooms at Plastic Surgical Associates of Fort Collins. PSA’s facility is fully accredited and uses only board-certified anesthesiologists and licensed support staff.
Depending on the patient’s needs, there are several incisions I may use. Here’s a brief overview:
Anchor mastopexy. This is the most common technique for women who require extensive reshaping and lift. It creates an incision around the areola, downwards, and around the base of the breast.
“Lollipop lift”. This approach, which creates a vertical line below the areola, is best for patients with breasts that are pointy and positioned downward.
Periareolar. When the nipples are positioned low on the breasts but sagging is minimal, I can employ this technique, which uses an incision around the areola only.
Most of the women in my care tell me that the benefits of breast lift—a perkier, more youthful appearance—far exceed the scarring that typically occurs. However, patients may also be good candidates for a scarless breast lift using radiofrequency.
I have developed the RF approach based on years of experience in plastic surgery and, to my knowledge, am the only plastic surgeon in the world who offers it:
This patient declined traditional breast lift with scars. 2 months after RF lift plus dual plane breast augmentation. The dramatic effect is partly due to the simultaneous abdominoplasty.
This patient nursed her child more frequently on the left side. Six weeks following breast augmentation with unilateral left RF breast lift.
Patients can learn more about this option in our initial consultation.
Patients return to the practice a day or two after surgery and then the following week to ensure they are progressing well in their recuperation. They come back about 6-8 weeks later for a final checkup and comparison photographs.
Most of my patients report minimal discomfort during recovery, likely because the procedure affects the skin and subcutaneous levels of tissue rather than the muscle and deeper levels. I advise them to:
Taking it easy after surgery is important for reducing bleeding, infection, and scarring and for getting the best results possible.
