Even with diet and exercise, certain parts of your body may not slim down the way you would like. I provide liposuction to patients who want to target these stubborn fat deposits and get a more contoured figure.

In addition to the abdomen, back and waist, some of the most common areas patients want liposuctioned are the neck, thighs, and flanks. Reducing the appearance of love handles, bra rolls, and waist rolls can transform a person’s silhouette and help rejuvenate an aging appearance. (note: I never liposuction anyone’s face above the jawline.)

My Approach to Liposuction

Traditional liposuction removes fat, but it can leave behind excess skin if the tissue is lax. Most patients need skin contraction in addition to fat removal to get the best results. For this reason, I offer two energy-assisted liposuction techniques:

  • SmartLipo by CynoSure® is the first laser with FDA approval for fat dissolution. In addition to eliminating fat, I have found that laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) contracts the skin by about 13-17 percent (versus 10 percent in traditional lipo). Another advantage of Smart Lipo is that it melts the fat before aspiration, minimizing the risk for cannula lines or other superficial contour irregularities.
  • ThermiTight by Thermi™ emits radiofrequency energy to shrink the tissue. In my experience, RF-assisted liposuction (RFAL) can provide 25-33 percent skin contracture.
If your skin in the area you want liposuctioned is a bit lax, then RFAL can help the soft tissue both lift and tighten. Improvement of skin laxity continues for at least one year after treatment with RFAL.

In some cases, I use LAL and RFAL together. This helps remove and reshape fat and shrink the skin to its new contour.

What You Can Expect with Liposuction

In the initial consultation, patients get answers to their questions, learn what liposuction can reasonably achieve, and receive guidance in making their decision. Following evaluation and scheduling, patients usually have their procedure at Plastic Surgical Associates of Fort Collins. Our practice offers an AAAASF-accredited suite of operating rooms, ensuring privacy and care that follows the highest standards.

As part of liposuction:

  • Patients receive light general anesthesia.
  • Regardless of whether they have LAL or RFAL, I apply tumescent fluid, which numbs the area, reduces bleeding and discomfort, and helps emulsify fat.
  • I create small incisions in targeted areas and use LAL or RFAL to remove fat and contract the excess skin.

Throughout the procedure, my aim is to contour the body in a way that is natural-looking, creates an attractive transition from one area to the next, and appears more toned.

Recovery from Liposuction

After liposuction, patients generally wear compression garments for about six weeks. This helps skin and soft tissue shrink to the target size and shape.

Since liposuction is minimally invasive—small poke holes rather than significant incisions—patients have fewer restrictions following surgery. I advise them to avoid heavy physical activity for a while and to take at least two to four days away from office work. By the conclusion of their recovery, they can expect a slimmer, firmer body contour.
